If you are in New York, check out these two poetry workshops lead by Bhisham Bherwani

Ekphrastic Poetry

Duration: Six consecutive Wednesdays, beginning February 27th

Description:  The thumbprint of visual art is discernible in so much of modern and contemporary poetry. Wittingly (or, unwittingly), poets evoke the visual arts in different ways to inform their work. Visual art can instruct poets about the creative process, extending metaphors for themes that may be personal, social or political. In this workshop participants’ poems will be considered from the perspective of their relationship to painting, sculpture, architecture and photography. During the course, participants will compose a short manuscript of poems.

Science in Poetry

Duration: Three consecutive Sundays, beginning February 17th

Description: Despite Wordsworth’s prescient distinction between poets and scientists in his 1802 Preface to Lyrical Ballads, science and technology permeate everyone’s lives and offer artists fresh metaphors and perspectives. Science has informed important works of poets from Lucretius to Milton to A. R. Ammons. In this workshop we will consider how we might embrace the language and objectives of science—from astronomy to geology to medicine—to inform our own poems.
